- Re-crawl and validate. After changes are made, run a follow-up crawl and check that links resolve correctly, destinations are appropriate and the intended pages are now connected. Continue monitoring after major releases because templates and URL changes can reintroduce problems.
How to judge the quality of an internal link
A useful internal link usually meets several conditions. It points to a live, indexable and relevant destination; it appears in content where the reader may reasonably need further information; its anchor text is specific enough to set expectations; and it contributes to a logical route through the site. How to prioritise audit findings
Start with issues affecting important, indexable pages and widely used templates. Broken links to key pages, orphaned pages that support important topics and links to incorrect canonical destinations normally deserve prompt attention. Next, review pages that attract substantial organic visibility or external authority, because improving their links to relevant supporting content may strengthen the wider topic structure.
Lower-priority findings can include isolated anchor-text variations, links in low-traffic areas and minor navigational inconsistencies that do not prevent discovery or create a poor user experience. Prioritisation should balance impact, confidence and implementation effort rather than treating every flagged URL equally.
What an audit does not prove
An internal link audit cannot guarantee rankings or demonstrate that a page will be indexed. Internal links are one part of technical SEO and content quality. Search engines also consider the page itself, site accessibility, external signals, duplication, relevance and many other factors. Similarly, adding more links does not automatically improve performance. Links should clarify relationships and help users reach genuinely useful content.
The most reliable outcome is a clearer, more maintainable site structure. When important pages are connected through relevant routes, outdated destinations are removed and anchor text accurately describes the content, users can navigate with less friction and search engines receive better signals about the purpose and relative importance of each page.
For a practical audit, retain a record of the original issue, the affected source and destination URLs, the recommended change and the result after implementation. Repeating the review after migrations, template changes and large-scale publishing helps prevent internal linking problems from accumulating again.
